After meeting with my mentor last Friday, I have decided to definitely pursue a research-based senior project on women in organic farming. Two weekends ago, my mother went on a "Foodie Tour" with a friend of hers where they met farmers on the North Fork and learned about each individual farm. While on the tour, they realized that almost every single farmer they met was a woman. We discussed this and we all thought that it would be an interesting and original idea for a senior project.
When I met with my mentor, he was very excited about the idea, and we looked up researched the idea a bit. When we searched "organic farming and women" on google, so many websites and articles came up. After looking at a few of them, we found that in many places throughout the world, women are starting to dominate the field of farming. I emailed Barbara Shinn, one of the owners of Shinn Vineyards in Mattituck, early this week and am waiting to hear back from her because she is a powerful woman farmer. Over the next few weeks, I am planning to really research this topic and take thorough notes on the information that I find. I am also meeting with my mentor tomorrow to discuss my final product as well as any other aspects of my project that we haven't discussed already.
