Ok so things are beginning to go somewhere for my project. I got the outside contacts to help me acquire biofilm and learn how to maintain it. I also am trying to figure out a visit to a real lab where they test biofilm. Patty is helping me with emailing these people and I hope they will be helpful. Other than that, this coming week I should be figuring out what kind of final product i will come out with. This part is slow for my project but i know speed will pick up once the wheels really get turning. Hopefully next week this post will be much more interesting!

My First Post.

My project is going to be a study on oral biofilms. Biofilm, very simply stated, is a community of bacteria. I am hoping to figure out ways that humans can use bacteria in beneficial ways. Over the summer i read a book called the Biofilm Primer and, although it was very dense, i gained an understanding of what the biofilm is.

This week i am beginning to set out my work to be done. I am working on figuring out how to get the biofilm that i will be using and experimenting on. I also need to figure out a main question, or several main questions, to direction my study towards. My mentor, Patty, has been helping me a lot to get the ball rolling with my project and figure out some of the logistics.

Also, this week I have been in the process of getting in touch with some of my outside consultants/super duper helpers! They should be able to help me figure out what i need to have some biofilm to work with.

I am excited about my project because this type of work interests me, but i am also nervous about a couple things.
