For my Senior Project, I am going to do a fundraiser in the form of visual and performing arts. I've always loved working with children, and when Douglas Gaboury came to visit our school to introduce the ZimKids organization I was immediately drawn to the cause. The point of ZimKids is to help children in Bulawayo realize their potential and, by doing so, actually helping themselves. The toys that are made by the children in Bulawayo are sold in the U.S., then the money is given to them to supply their families with the things they need. Both times Dennis brought the orginization to Ross, I volunteered to help sell the dolls. He saw how passionate I was about the project, and when my mentor Mr. Chris asked him about involving the ZimKids orginization in my senior project, Dennis said yes right away.
This summer, I worked with talented kids that had potential even unrealized by them, and I decided to bring their talents to the forefront by putting on a concert expressing their individual talents, whether it be singing, dancing, or reading poetry. The kids will also make hand-crafted toys in honor of the kids in Zimbabwe who truly originated the entire concept of my project, and at the end of the night there will be a sale of both dolls made by the children of Bulawayo and the "Expressive Voices" kids. I named my project Expressive Voices because a voice cannot truly be heard without the allowance of expression. That is what Dennis did for the kids in Bulawayo, and that's what I want to do for the kids that I work with.
